About Hungarian Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc in Hungary had gained attention by the end of 1990s when in some wine producing regions climate and growing conditions proved to be not optimal for Cabernet Sauvignon to reach its full ripeness. Successful varietal examples from Villány and Szekszárd show great potential, some international experts declared that Cabernet Franc "found its new home in the Villány region". (e.g.: Jancis Robinson, David Copp)

Hungarian varietal Cabernet Franc is a typically full-bodied, moderately or highly tannic wine with rich aromas of spices, blue flowers and red/black berry fruits with a reasonably good aging potential of about 10 years. These wines typically undergo 12 to 18 months of aging in new Hungarian oak barrels.

As well as Villány and Szekszárd, Cabernet Franc is also present in Eger, and - to a lesser extent - in South Balaton vineyards. Cabernet Franc often complements Bordeaux-style blends from these regions and occasionally plays a role in rosé production.

During the summer break

Hi, everybody!

You may think, oh, this WEINKOMPLOTT team has already forgotten to write reports on Hungarian wines, or they are on holiday all the summer.
Telling the truth, this did not happened with us. On the contrary.
We had a very eventful summer this year. We and our wines were always on the highway :))

But let's see what happened with us in the last two months.

1. Our greatest news: Hungarian Egri Bikavérs have reached New Zealand :))
We are so proud and glad to tell you this news, because if you think over how amazingly far is this country from us, how can happen that somebody there likes Hungarian Bikavérs...and how long the wines have to be transported to get the land, you can feel: this is a real big success for us!! and of course for HUNGARIAN WINES!!

2. In July took place the 4. VinAgora International Wine Gala in Budapest. Of course, we could not miss the possibility to retaste winner wines (wines of the Wine Compass of Central Europe), so it was a must to go there. And in contrast to last year, this Gala was real good and professional organised. The location was perfect and elegant, moreover wines were good chilled. On Facebook I have promissed that we will write a Top25 list for you, but unfortunately till now it has not happened... :)

So now, please find here our Top10 below:

1./ Bock - Cabernet Sauvignon Jammertal Selction 2007 /Villány/- Gold
2./ Ikon - Tulipán 2008 /Balaton/ - Gold

9. / Béres - Tokaji Furmint Omlás 2008 /Tokaj/ - Gold
10./ Ikon - Evangelista - Cabernet Franc 2008 /Balaton/ - Silver

3. Our Wine-Club in Munich though had a summer break, but we have worked hard. We still organize our next event with a lot of power and bring "INNOVATIONS" into our tastings! More Information at the end of September!!

4. Thanks to our Hungarian wine lower friends in Swiss, we were invited to present our wines in a familier group in Basel. I think it was a real interesting evening together. Many thanks for the possibility and for the invitation. We hope, not only our white wines, but our red wines as well were something new and great for you. We tasted 11 different Top wines such as the Cuvée 5 from the Sauska Winery or the Nyúlászó Furmint from Istvan Szepsy. This time the "main course" was mostly Tokaj and Villány.

5. After the Rose-time, we have packed together some Hungarian tasting box for you.
So at the moment you can find mixed cases from Furmint, Kékfrankos, Kadarka, Cabernet Franc and some special discoveries in our webshop.

And right now, we are happy to continue our work with the biggest Hungarian Wine Fair and Exhibition in Budapest. Post coming soon!

F.Y.I.: Winemaking of Hungary 1. (in English)

News from Budapest - Furmint February 2011

The guiding principle of the Furmint February is: in Ferbruary to drink and taste as much Hungarian Furmint as you can :))) so popularizing the Furmint grape variety!
Have you ever tasted a Furmint? When not, do not miss the chance to get to know them! It is worth it! In our webshop you can find only the bests. (dry and sweet, full with minerality, or with interesting fruitiness, older and new vintages)

... furthermore we have special Furmint tasting box as well!

We are happy if you find your favourite one! :)

2011-01-23

What do you think? What did we taste on Friday? :)

O.K., it was a quite a difficult question... so it is not more a secret :)
We had a big Bikavér-tasting at home! 4 different Bikavérs, from 2 different wine regions, from 2 different vintages, with 4 professional wine taster! And we had an odd-one-out wine! :)
Which ones were than???

See the list below....

1. Heimann - Cervaes 2006 (our odd-one-out cuvée this time)
2. Mészáros - Bikavér Reserve 2007
3. Takler - Bikavér Reserve 2007
4. Takler - Bikavér Reserve 2006
5. Gróf Buttler - Egri Bikavér - Nagy-Eged 2006

As you see, we tasted only the bests! :)
And the result?....

Among the bests, everybody has a favourite one! But the 5. wine is a real tresure for everybody!
