Looking back! - Experiences of the Wine Festival in Budapest

.... Rain, rain and rain....

Summing up our Hungarian wine festival in Budapest, that was our deepest experience this year... Unfortunately the weather did not do us any favour ... so we had to walk in the rain (all the day) with umbrellas, bags, notes and glasses.... (I think you can imagine how to do it...) Friday and Saturday were especially heavy rainy days...
so we were very-very wet at the end of the day... but not from wines.... :)
Sunday was a little bit better... with a pritty sunshine... but as we had to start back early to Munich, could not enjoy the festival without rain for a long time ...

But, going back to the point, now I try to talk about more positiv things... WINES and WINERIES! :)
Telling the truth, this year, our favourite wine region was (or is) Szekszárd!

We found smaller wineries with wonderful hand-made wines and their quality is talking about hard work! Our favourite new wineries are: Mészáros Pál and Bősze Adriann from Szekszárd!We would like to take their wines in our programm and show customers and people in Munich, wow... we have something new and nice!
And of course, many thanks to our partners who were there - Heimann, Bodri, Sebestyén, Takler, Eszterbauer - for the good winetastings!
Our next favourite or our best of this year, was Tokaj! Sweet (e.g. Aszús) and late harvest wines especially from the Béres and the Ch. Dereszla Winery! Superb Furmints from the Tokaji Bormívelők Társasága! So I am sure that, at Christmas, these wines can not miss from our tables! They are so good!!
Unfortunately 2 and half a day was not enough to spend time everywhere, but we tried it! :)
Pictures... I have not so many because of the unpleasant rain...
But finally, I could record the most important impression or feeling of the participants and the exhibitors of the festival:

:))))) No comment!

Have a nice day!

Huge Hungarian Cabernet Franc tasting last Friday :))

Thanks to the kind invitation of our Hungarian Wine-lover friend, Ossi, we participated in a huge Cabernet franc tasting last Friday, next to Munich.

19 different Franc.... superb group of guests... good talks and wonderful szegedi gulasch (székely káposzta)... everything at our friend, Ossi!

The slideshow is talking about our impressions :))))

Many thanks to you, Ossi and Sabine, for the kind hospitality!

Only 6 days left....

The major participants of the Hungarian winemaking scene present samples of their best items soon in Budapest. (8-12 of September) Beside local products, several bottles will be introduced at the Festival from outside of the country (from the whole Carpathian Basin).
But it is not all. ... we will have music and party everywhere in the Castle to encrease our good mood. See you there soon! :)
....
‘We can’t wait to storm the Buda Castle again this September, to occupy it for five days and take hold of all we can find at the 19th Buda Castle Wine Festival. And there are things worth seizing… All you can wish for and all that our national culture represents: tradition, music, dance, poetry and, of course, wine. Wine, faithful companion of the Hungarian people both in good times and bad for many long centuries.’ (Gyula Szarka, Ghymes)

Our Study Tour in Szekszárd and Villány

Szekszárd and Villány are the southest wine regions of Hungary. The soil and the climate, for instant, favour red varieties in both regions. Wines from these regions are very popular not only in Hungary, but among in European customers as well. However, at the moment, Villány maybe more world-known than Szekszárd, we are convinced that Szekszárd is on the right way to join up to the world famous position and probably we will hear a lot about Szekszarder wines in the next years.

In the microclimate of Szekszárd the Mediterranean influence remains strong favouring so the special and declared autochthonous Hungarian grape variety, the Kadarka. Kadarka was largely responsible for the worldwide fame of Szekszárd wines in the 19th century. "Such wines were enthusiastically endorsed by the great musicians Franz Schubert and Ferenc Liszt, whose popularity in 19th-century-Europe was equivalent to that of modern pop stars." So we try not to forget this interesting variety and popularise among our customers and friends. Hey, I have something special for you. Come and drink something new. ;)

But going back to the point, this time, for instant, we were interested in finding great Szekszarder Kadarkas, but we have also found great cuvée-s, white Kadarka, Blauburger and Kékfrankos of the region. (so when we go on study tour we are ready to discover always everything what we can.... :))

Looking at our photos it is not more a secret that we were shortly in Villány as well, and we visited our new-found winery, Heumann.
For the first time, we met the Heumann family at the Prowein (international wine fair) in Düsseldorf, and already that time it was decided that we would like to keep in touch with them and their wines.

The Heumann family - as a german man and a swiss wife - arrived to Villány in 1995 with a great intention to make wines as hobby vintners but as the time was going on and their international results are coming, we can see that the hobby winemaking time turned into a very serious and high quality wine producing process, and however they are not so well known and famous in Hungary yet, the group of their esthusiats are wider and wider on the swiss and the international market. And it is no accident.

Their quality improvements are documented through local and national silver and gold medals as well as with very good scores in well known wine magazines like Decanter, Vinum and others, so we really have to pay attention on their work!

At the moment, four different Heumann wines are available in our webshop, such as Azzurone 2007, Kékfrankos 2007, Cabernet Franc 2007 and the U and I 2008 (which is a very interesting coproduction of the Heumann und the Szekszardian Heimann Family). So in case of interest, you can find not only Kadarkas but Heumann wines as well in our catalogue. :) It is worth tasting!

Home-made Cabernet Franc tasting!

First of all, what do we know about Cabernet Franc? what kind of grape variety is it ? What kind of wine do we taste when we open a bottle of them?

If you can not answer these questions suddenly by heart, it is also not a problem, because here we try to answer all the basic questions of this variety!
:) Starting with a short summary on Franc.

... It is said Cabernet Franc is one of the major red grape varieties worldwide. /so Cabernet Franc is one of the twenty most widely planted grape varieties./
It is principally grown for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the Bordeaux wine style, called Bordeaux cuvées, but can also be vinified alone. (for example, this time we tasted only 100% Cabernet Franc and 2 bottles only from selected grapes and vinyards!)

Cabernet Franc is basicly less pungently aromatic and lighter than the Sauvignon making a bright pale red wine and contributing finesse and a peppery perfume to blends with more robust grapes. In good locations and years it can attain superior depth of flavour (aged for 15 or than 10 years).
And depending on growing region and style of wine, additional aromas can include tobacco, raspberry, and cassis, sometimes even violets or sloe.

It has also slightly less tannin than Sauvignon and tends to produce a wine with a smoother mouthfeel….

So they can be the main information what are suggested to have as a preknowledge about the grape before I start to explain about our homemade blind wine tasting, so let's have a look now what happened at us some days ago....

Telling the truth, I like Franc-s, and I wanted to explore our sortiment and test our tasting abilities how we can make differences between franc-s from different Hungarian wine regions. Well, with this idea, I arranged 4 glasses with 4 different wines for my partner specialist (only I knew which wines we have in which glass :))), and I gave him the task to find out which wines they can be in the glasses, from which regions, from which vintages and from which winemakers.
:))))

You can think now: UHHH...quite a difficult task! and I have to agree with you, because for a specialist is a very hard and comlex work as well to definite wines without any main points...
But I have to declare that our blind taster specialist was not bad, moreover really good in guess!

And what about the results?
Well, I could collect some very interesting conclusions:

1. Even if you know a lot about Cabernet franc, quite difficult to find out in a blind way from 4 different wines that all, what you taste, are franc-s!

2. our Franc-a were totally different from each other, depending on determinants such as wine region, winemaker, vintage and style!

3. very interesting to recognise and describe wines without any preknowledge and prejudice! :)

4. not every wine can be drinkable suddenly (sometimes 1 day later much better their taste!)

so when we drink a good Cabernet Franc, we should give time to the wine! then it can be so thanksful to us!

5. Our opinion is that alone vinified Franc-s can be also so wonderful, so it is great that not only for blends are grown!

6. some cabernet franc can be very funny and can make jokes with us! :)

As it is a very colourful wine and grape variety suggested to taste every time when you have possibility to get in touch with some examples. :))

For us made fun to taste them and somewhen we would like to continue our franc queue with other bottles. :)
But I think, next time, I have to be on the another side.... :))

And finally the wines of our home-made tasting:

1. Bolyki: Cabernet Franc 2006
2. Csányi: Cabernet Franc 2006
3. Takler: Cabernet Franc 2007
4. Tiffán: Cabernet Franc 2007

Our VinAgora Top 25

Only one report is missing about the VinAgora Gala yet , namely as we promised, our experiences about exhibited wines.
Telling the truth, it is very difficult to declare this or that was the best one, or we liked only this or that, but the fact is, among the lot of good wines, we have found even more beautiful items. After a long discussion, we have drawn up an own VinAgora Top 25 hit-list about wines we liked mostly from entered and tasted wines of the Gala. (please find below our favourite list on wineries and wines in alphabetical order) As you can see, in some cases we were on the same opinion as the international VinAgora jury, but in other cases assessed wine more than the jury on the competition.
But I think this is good so... such as Varietas delictat! :)

Why should we drink Hungarian wine?

While in Hungary people of the wine scene are talking about questions such as which wineries have the best wines, which grape variety they like - which one not, which wine regions are fashionable nowadays, which wine festival they should visit next time… till people outside of Hungary do not know too much about Hungarian wines.

We - in Munich - continuously try to answer basic questions of European people (customers) such as:

Why should we buy and drink Hungarian wine? Anyway.... what about Hungarian wines? We know almost nothing about them....

Well, to be quite frank, they are right, because if I would be an everyday person, for example in Germany or in Great Britain, who is only a normal fine wine drinker (so somebody who likes real good wines, but knows only French, Spanish or Italien types) does not follow any wine blog with attention, can not speak any Hungarian, has never been to Hungary, has no relationship with any Hungarian person... so how I would be informed on wonderful Hungarian wine products?
It is also true, not so many people is writing about them in newspapers, and we can not find so many Hungarian bottles on shelves in exclusive wine shops or in wine bars outside of Hungary... How could I be convinced to buy fine wines from Hungary?

Well... I think, nohow...
But now - if this person somehow could find us and may read now our website, I would like to give shortly two small reasons why it is worth getting to know Hungarian wines.
Could the following answers carry conviction?

...Look, here is Hungary, and the land of Hungary – in the middle of Europe – is blessed with perfect soil types and climate conditions for viticulture and wine making. The viniculture of Hungary dates back more than 2,000 years. As already the Celts and the Romans produced wine in this part of the world. And Hungary has a special terroir what other countries do not have….

The quality of Hungarian wines developed a lot in the last 20 years. Hungarian wine makers are working on their best and want to rebuild the reputation for fine wines that Hungary enjoyed before pestilence, war and Communism reduced them to ruin and however in the last 20 years Hungarian governments did not lay any emphases and spend no money on wine marketing like Chile, Italy, France, Spain or Austria, Hungarians have excellent products which have energy and vitality and the country has very interesting and unique (autochthon) grape varieties which you can not find in other countries in Europe.

If it is said that the terroir provides character of the wine and the winemaker its personality and Hungarian wineregions are blessed with superb soil and climate conditions, and winemakers do give their excellent knowledge, Hungarian fine wines simply must be really very good!

However Hungarian wines and wine makers do not have so much official support and ready united international marketing concept at the moment, one thing is sure: If you like gourmet dishes and fine wines or you are a wine lover searching for specialties of the world, you can not miss Hungarian fine wines and the wine varieties of this country!

Decanter World Wine Awards 2010

At the beginning of the summer we have always such a lot of national and international wine competitions where Hungarian wines are awarded with medals, prizes or tropheé-s that I can not follow with article writing... I am always reading every newspaper, internet websites (in Hungarian, in German, and in English, too) and I am always finding something interesting... But now I have to promise myself, from today I will concentrate only on the most important competitions! Therefore I am writing now about (the pritty missing) very important international wine competition, the Decanter World Wine Awards!

This year, as in the previous year too, the Decanter competition took place in the middle of May, in London. International jury, complicated judging system... So that (I think) we should not take care on the circumstances rather on the results!

Participated at the 3. Vinagora Gala - Budapest

Following the annual VinAgora International Wine Competition, on 3rd of July, 2010, the increasingly popular and exclusive VinAgora Gala was held for the 3rd time in Budapest. This all-day wine Gala, year by year, provides the opportunity for the public, after that the expert jury has judged the wines and decided about medals and awards, to taste and assess the more than 500 different wines which were entered to the competition. The idea is that you can build up and compare your opinion about the wines with the opinion of the international jury. More over you can taste wonderful wines, new (till now unknown) vintages and you can get to know the news of the international wine market.

I think we can declare that this Gala is one of the most interesting and elegant possibility for public to get in touch with wines, winemakers and experts, too.
As you can see in our taken photos the place (the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest) is also very nice and gives a very special atmosphere to the winetasting Gala, while you are dropping and thinking about your wine.

But still unfortunately we could find two small problems at the Gala…
... 1.- the air-condition was missinging very much in the hall (as both outside and inside was heatwave...) and the wines were not cold enough for drinking…as the exhibitors did not have enough fridge and ice on stock in this more than hot weather… :(
So prepearing for the next time, we would suggest to the organisers the followings:

Please find solutions to chill the wines!!! or please find another palace with air-condition!!!

thank you for your efforts in advance!
See you next year again!

11. VinAgora International Wine Competition 2010

On 17-20th of June, 2010, the Vinagora International Wine Competition was held for the 11th time in Hungary (this year in Visegrád – in Hotel Thermal). This competition is member of the VinoFed and called the Wine Compass of Central Europe. The international expert jury (54 persons) assesses entered wines in every year (in this year 552 examples arrived from 21 different countries) in the following big categories:

A. „Stricto Sensu”: such us still white wines, white wines of aromatic varieties, still rosé wines, still red wines, pearl wines and sparkling wines

and

B. Special Wines: as natural special wines (late harvest and icewines), Botrytis type of wines (Tokaji Szamorodni, Tokaji Aszú, Sauternes, Rust) and fortified wines (e.g.: Jerez, Porto, Malaga, Marsala, Medera etc.)

From entered wines just 30% can get medals (by categories) and the medals can be only gold and silver!

This time 83 Gold and 84 Silver medals were awarded and from this ammount 121 Hungarian wines won Medal! :)

6 wines got Champion category prize, 3 wines Media Special Prize, 8 wines won „The best variety wine of the VinAgora” Special Prize, but in the „Best of Country” category Croatia and Slovakia were the best ones!

Congratulations to the Winners!

Visiting Szekszárd - about the Bodri Winery - Report 2.

Continuing our reports on our Szekszárd trip in February, we have to talk about the Bodri Winery.

At present, the Bodri estate is about 40 hectares, of which 22 hectares is vineyards. A good part of it (11 hectares) is located in Faluhely, as well as rather dispersed and in several pieces, among the fabulously beautiful hills and valleys of the Szekszárd region. ( e.g.: Iván-völgy, Gurovica, Gesztenyés and the Csötönyi-völgy).

The rest part of the estate includes three more premier cru areas with southern exposure and several forests therefore, if need be, there are pontentials for increasing their production area.

As a matter of fact, the development of the cellar is also well underway. At the moment they are working on a huge investment project to achieve a 1,720 m2 complex, with a guest-house, new storage area, warehouse for finished goods, and a new place for bottle mellowing. Moreover the construction of a 3.3 km water-channeling system is also underway. According to the plans, the whole complex will be finished around 2013.

So the investments and infrastructure of the Bodri Winery are really impressive, even by international standards, therefore, the framework is there.

And what about Bodri wines?

Beside their infrastructural investments, their main goal is: to achieve international standards in their wines. According to the international successes (the most recent of which is the Brussels gold of Optimus 2006), no question, the Bodri winery works with professionality.

Their wine-maker, Bősz Adrián, is a young viticulturist with high qualification in viticulture, and who has a very consciously and modern approach to making wines.

Disvovering the Bodri wines, we can find from the interesting and fresh white Kadarka, till the real selection wines almost everything (Kékfrankos, Pinot Noir, Red Cuvée-s, Bikavér etc...), which are so good and drinkable everyday wines.
But the selection wines are the real top wines of the cellar, which are marketed only if they achieve especially high quality at the harvest.

In February, thanks to the very kind Bodri hospitality, we tasted the following wines at the winery.

"Kati" - white Kadarka 2008
Kadarka 2008
Bodrikutya(cuvée)2008
Kékfrankos 2007
Civilis Cuvée 2007
Kékfrankos Selection (Faluhely) 2006
Cabernet Franc Selection (Faluhely) 2007
Bikavér Selection (Faluhely) 2006
and finally the Optimus QV.

As you can see in the picture, on the left side. :)

One thing is sure - we only can recommend you to taste Bodri wines, because they are carefully made and good structured wines, but let us suggest you to have one, at least:
Cabernet Franc Válgotás (Faluhely) 2007.
This is really so good... Hm... I also have to drink again! :)
